Last year, seemed to be all about planes, trains and automobiles. I traveled a great deal for work and pleasure. I was relieved whenever I got to sleep in the same bed for more than 3 nights in a row. Time zones, long days of meetings, eating hotel food and not having a consistent exercise routine played havoc on my health. As the year went on, I discovered some strategies for keeping myself on track. For fellow travellers, here’s what I unpacked:
- Airports – Walk rather than taking the moveable sidewalks. Stand and stretch rather than sitting at the gate. I learned to ignore the stares. Many airports concession stands are stocking healthier options such as sushi, salads, fresh fruit and gluten free items. Several I frequent have Smoothie stands and Asian-style food with rice and lots of veggie options.
- Hotel Stays – While it is light outside, go for a walk and find a small grocery store. Stock up on fresh fruit and healthy snacks.
- All day workshops and meetings – Often the breakfasts and snacks provided are sugary, salty and high in calories. Bring your own fruit, powerbars and almonds (see tip above). While others are slumping in the afternoon, you’ll be full of energy. Go for a walk at the breaks and lunch. If you want to network invite people to walk and talk.
- Avoid travel dehydration – Drink plenty of water or herbal tea to stay hydrated.
