Long sunny days; vacation and relaxation time – summer gives a break from many of our usual patterns. I always think spontaneous fun and a greater sense of freedom are the special pleasures of summer. And I notice how quickly the “lazies” settle in. It is so easy to get planted. Keep an eye on how much time you’re sitting on deck chairs, beach blankets, sport bleachers, bar stools and boating cushions. Stay physically active for at least 30 minutes a day – that still leaves 1410 minutes for other summer pursuits! Put a big green checkmark on your calendar when you achieve your goal.

Summer Bonus Activities

  • If you’re watching your kids or grandkids play sports, walk around the field during the warm-up and when there are breaks in the action.
  • Keep a pair of walking shoes in your vehicle to take advantage of spontaneous moments for walking on a beach boardwalk or a shady conservation area path. Flip flops and sandals keep your feet cool but don’t provide enough support for walking.
  • Swim, canoe, kayak, walk/jog in the water, dance, bike or walk – enjoy the freedom that moving brings!
