Many of us work in an office environment, but this shouldn’t stop anyone from getting the exercise they need. In fact, taking the stairs while at work can be a great way to make sure you are getting up and active as much as possible.

Recent research has shown that although getting regular exercise, such as jogging or biking, is critically important, limiting sitting behaviours throughout the day is equally important. In fact, scientists have found that those who reach the Canadian activity guidelines of 150 minutes of exercise per week, but who sit for most of their remaining time, are still at risk for developing chronic disease. BUT, you can use the stairs at your work or home to your advantage by either getting your heart rate up or just setting some extra steps in:

Exercise

 • Jogging up the stairs in your apartment, home, school, or work is an easy way to get your heart rate up and improve your fitness
 • Simply walking up the stairs in the office instead of taking the elevator keeps you moving for longer

Tip: Next time you are faced with the choice of the elevator vs. the stairs, it should be an easy choice!
